Moving the IKEA Brimnes King Sized Bed
What could be more fun than assembling a piece of IKEA furniture? How about disassembling it? As we were expecting our firstborn, and we had divided the living area to create a quiet sanctuary for baby and mama, we now needed to move the bed from the master bedroom to that new space. Our master bed is a king sized by from IKEA. It’s one of the Brimnes series and has a few clunky moving parts. Below is is a detailed list of all of the steps involved in quickly disassembling the bed such that it can be moved without a complete disassembly. Remove the linens. An obvious step. Leave the fitted sheet or mattress cover on if you need to slide the mattress along the floor when you move it. It’s easier to clean linens than it is to clean a mattress. With a friend, or pregnant woman, muscle the mattress off of the bed and stand it vertically. Slide it out of the way, wherever that may be. Remove the springy slat assemblies. Just pick them up (there are two) and haul them out of the way. Remove the drawers, set aside. If they have heavy crap in them, remove the crap before pulling the drawers out. You’ll have access to the tops of them after removing the springy slat things. Unscrew and remove the 4 tension bars that run diagonally above each of the drawer spaces. Unscrew the center support that runs from the head-board to the foot of the bed. Unscrew the side rails from the base dividers (those two big pieces that divide the drawer areas.) Remove the panels at the head and the foot of the bed. This will enable you to pick up the side railings and move them out of the way. Disconnect the center divider pieces from the bottom stretchers that run from the head to the foot of the bed on each side of the bottom of the frame. Disassemble the center divider panels. There are 3 pieces. One long piece runs from the head to the foot, and the two smaller pieces extend from the center to the sides. You now have everything disassembled to the point at which you can easily carry each piece to its new location. Simply re-assemble the bed in the reverse order and you’re golden.
